Thursday island is the administrative centre for
the Torres Strait region. The island was
first settled permanently in 1877 followed by the establishment of a
thriving pearling industry in 1885.

This small island community became a melting pot of
mixed cultures. During World War II became the military headquarters for
the Torres Strait.
Since
then sea based industries have carries on according to world demand.
These have included pearls, shells, crayfish, prawns and fish.
Today fishing is
still a main industry along with an increasing tourism industry.
This small
tropical paradise can aptly be described as a peaceful idyllic destination
with friendly people, a colorful history, surrounded by the turquoise
waters of the Torres Strait.
